[SOLVED] System is suddenly extremely slow and unresponsive

Not sure what forum to post this on, so I'm posting it here.

Suddenly and seemingly out of nowhere, my system became extremely slow and unresponsive. Opening or switching between applications is slow. There's a very noticeable lag entering text. Booting the system or logging into KDE take an order of magnitude longer. Deus Ex (the original game from 2000) runs at 3-10 fps. It sometimes fails just to change the volume using keyboard volume keys, and there's a very noticeable lag when it does. There's no process hogging all the CPU, memory isn't full, swap is unused, drives aren't full. I have no idea what to do.

And to reiterate, this happened suddenly, out of the blue, while I was using my computer normally. And it persists across reboots.

So... any help would be appreciated.

Re: [SOLVED] System is suddenly extremely slow and unresponsive

Update: The problem is somewhat solved. I finally got a message saying that the battery is low, so apparently the power supply was loose or something. Plugged it back in nice and tight and every's running normally again. That was some really aggressive hardware throttling, but maybe it only started when the battery got really low?

Conceivably, this might be configurable in the BIOS but OC slowing down the system is favorable to a sudden power cut from an undervolted battery.

Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.
