gtk4, lutris, and niri for example depend on the GTK desktop portal.
If the idea is hard-dependency on a desktop portal implementation, shouldn't they depend on xdg-desktop-portal-impl instead?
Is there any actual hard dependency on GTK here?

At least https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/niri/ has it only as optional (commenting "suggested implementation") dep next to the hard dependency on the generic.
since the various implementations have random subset coverage and generically don't work outside specific environments at all it certainly does make sense to advertise preferences of implementations that will probably work at least as good as the protocol allows to prevent users from runtime errors despite formally correct static installations.

xdg-desktop-portal-impl is a virtual package that - as far as I know - doesn't exist in the xdg desktop portal specification or on other linux distros .
Also portal backends are tailored to specific wayland compositors / DEs and don't follow a standard .
The xdg-desktop-portal-kde , xdg-desktop-portal-gtk , xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland etc do different things in different ways .
GTK4 for example relies on functionality that's only present in xdg-desktop-portal-gtk and can not use xdg-desktop-portal-kde .
TL;DR : xdg-desktop-portal is a big mess
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Can't only one desktop portal implementation run at the same time though?
Does that mean GTK4 is broken if xdg-desktop-portal-gtk is not the actively running implementation (even though it's installed because it's required by the package)?
