No audio on speakers on linux-6.19.6 (both normal and zen kernels)

Updated my system today and it broke audio only from speakers, bluetooth works correctly and wired works kinda ok (low volume but that's been a problem for a while and I've been lazy to fix it)

I tried 1st downgrading all newly updated pipewire related packages to no avail, then downgraded the kernel(+ headers) and got my audio back, then I upgraded back all pipewire packages and stayed on 6.18.13, everything seems to be working on this config.

These are the packages that came on this update (but again, rolling back only the kernel fixes it)

Re: No audio on speakers on linux-6.19.6 (both normal and zen kernels)

Same here. Updated kernel to 6.19.6-arch1-1 and pipewire, sound's gone. Thinkpad T14s Gen 4 Intel. Rebooted to linux-lts 6.12.75-1, sound's still gone. Rebooted back and sound works. Didn't really do anything other than rebooting and didn't have any issues with sound before. Very weird.

Same issue on my laptop and my desktop. Reboot twice and sound work.

Re: No audio on speakers on linux-6.19.6 (both normal and zen kernels)

OK here's something weird... I had a different issue when upgrading the kernel 6.18.13 -> 6.19.6 (Youtube crashing on Firefox), but it fixed itself the same way, 2 reboots and the issue was gone.

Re: No audio on speakers on linux-6.19.6 (both normal and zen kernels)

Same here, when updating to linux-6.19.6.arch1-1  my Creative X-Fi PCIe sound card disappears from  /proc/asound/cards and the pulseaudio mixer so no more audio. Plus this kernel hangs on reboot too. Reverting to linux-6.18.9.arch1-2 (and headers) fixes the problem.

Re: No audio on speakers on linux-6.19.6 (both normal and zen kernels)

A plausible explanation for why “two reboots” appear to fix the issue might be an EC or firmware reset after the controller ends up in a bad state, I experienced smtg similar where my touchpad stopped working entirely (I saw I²C controller timeouts in the logs...), even rebooting into another OS didn’t fix it initially, after two reboots, it started working again, so yeah this might be a timing regression in the new kernel leaving the controller in a bad state, and a full EC/firmware reset during POST eventually clears it...

Re: No audio on speakers on linux-6.19.6 (both normal and zen kernels)

I tried updating again and rebooting a bunch of times but still got no audio.

My issue is also different to JinxterX's one, my card is still recognized on kde system settings and easyeffects, I assume it shows up correctly elsewhere.

edit: Never mind, I was being dumb as well as sleep-deprived. The card that shows up is the HDMI audio.

Re: No audio on speakers on linux-6.19.6 (both normal and zen kernels)

If the card still appears in KDE settings and EasyEffects, then the kernel driver and ALSA layer are likely working, and in that case the issue might be somewhere in the PipeWire/WirePlumber layer rather than the kernel itself...
can you share relevant logs?

Re: No audio on speakers on linux-6.19.6 (both normal and zen kernels)

My audio was also gone yesterday after upgrading to Linux 6.19 and Pipewire 1.6. I restored the system with Timeshift. After trying upgrading again today, somehow the audio works perfectly. Maybe a minor patch version change in today's Arch packages fixed the problem.

Re: No audio on speakers on linux-6.19.6 (both normal and zen kernels)

My issue appears to be related to commits to the ctxfi driver in 6.19 which are causing it to crash?

Re: No audio on speakers on linux-6.19.6 (both normal and zen kernels)

I think I have a similar issue. Currently on 6.19.6 kernel and pipewire 1.6.0.
After pipewire 1.6 update, I only get sound if I select a different output device then reverting back to the default one.

Re: No audio on speakers on linux-6.19.6 (both normal and zen kernels)

There are a lot of 'me too' posts here.  Many (Most?) of us are having no problems with audio after the kernel and pipewire upgrades.

Might I suggest those of you having problems look for what your systems have in common?   Perhaps start by finding your audio device in the output of lspci -nnk and compare whether you all have common hardware and kernel modules driving said cards.    If you do, that points one direction.  If you don't, it points elsewhere.

Re: No audio on speakers on linux-6.19.6 (both normal and zen kernels)

yep seems like kernel 6.19.x and 7.0.x broke kernel module snd_ctxfi
not sure how to report that

Same here, when updating to linux-6.19.6.arch1-1  my Creative X-Fi PCIe sound card disappears from  /proc/asound/cards and the pulseaudio mixer so no more audio. Plus this kernel hangs on reboot too. Reverting to linux-6.18.9.arch1-2 (and headers) fixes the problem.

I found that blacklisting kernel module snd_ctxfi fixed the hangs on reboot
This obviously makes the sound card not work but it doesnt work either way

I found that blacklisting kernel module snd_ctxfi fixed the hangs on reboot
This obviously makes the sound card not work but it doesnt work either way

You can create a custom kernel patched with the diff between the linux-6.18.9-arch1/sound/pci/ctxfi directory and the same location in the latest kernels to revert the problem commits, it's a bit of a convoluted procedure involving git and editing the PKGBUILD to incorporate the patch but it appears to work as a temporary solution. I had to search and read up on creating patches and installing custom Arch kernels and (in my case) updating GRUB but eventually got it working. Take quite a long time to compile your own kernel tho..

Re: No audio on speakers on linux-6.19.6 (both normal and zen kernels)

My problem was resolved on kernel 7.0.0-1-cachyos
