[SOLVED] Lost connection to router

Hello,
Sorry I am writing from my cell phone
Last week end i did a full system upgrade

Since the migration to nftables I totally lost internet access.  So I installed iptables-legacy and disable nft but still no connections.

Ufw and ufw.service are active
Ican see from logs that ufw is not blocking anything.

I am totally illeterate whrn it comes to iptables
Please let me know what logs I should post to restore NAT.

dns is handled by my router where dnscrypt-proxy2 intercepts everything.

Please assist, been 3 days without connectivity and all other devices such as my wotk.pc work fine.

Stop nftables.service,  ufw.service and flush the nft rules, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Nftables#Usage
If you still cannot reach

ping _gateway
ip a; ip r
systemctl status nftables.service

You can link a screenshot/photo of the output (please don't embed huge images and please also manually don't transcribe stuff)

Please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b > /tmp/journal.txt

and then usb walk that to a system w/ internet access for upload.

Brace for impact it is huge, i don't have access to another computer and cant copy all with my phone clipboard, i will try to gather as much as possible. 

I should have probably turned off ufw log and shutdown toer service.  Btw thanks I apreciate your support

Or is there a way to pull boot logs lets say from just the last boot, to make that file lighter or send by email.  I really dont feel like going to a place to rent a pc.  But if Ihave no choice I will

"sudo journalctl -b > /tmp/journal.txt" is the current boot, "sudo journalctl -b -1 > /tmp/journal.txt" would be the previous.
It's gonna be >> 2k lines and 500-1000kB

Unless you've constanly been re-plugging the ethernet cable
The cable is either not properly slotted on either end (it has to firmly snap it, there's a little latch that needs to catch - sometimes the latch has a protection that can collide with the case and prohibit full insertion) or the cable is broken

The plan going forward is to simplify that until you've a working connection and then re-introducing complexities one-by-one and assert proper behavior after each step.

Thanks for your assessment

The ethernet cable is brand new, purchased 2 weeks ago, the only reason i changed was that the new cable was on sale. The ethernet light is on and I even swap cables once more.

You know what's weird, i use rsyslog and I am able to receive the router's log through port 514

There's a usb key plugged to my router with entware opt installed.  @boot my pc is supposed to automatically mount it via ssh. 

When this issue started the ssh connection to mount would fail and jam the whole system for a few minutes, even the xfce4 would not allow me to input any command for a while.

After breaking my head I removed the ssh command from fstab and discovered that a /data partition was missing (not related to the issue I think but was an extra headache.

Then I thought theconnection issue was related to the conversion to nft.  Then I removed gfuw + ufw and tried to set up nftables only. No connection still after multi tests.

So then I reinstated ufw. Reinstalling by downloading the zip file from my phone, tranfred to pc and install using pacman.

Not sure if it is worth mentionning but I have firejail and apparmor installed, but tleverything was working fine until that full system upgrade.

Should i flush all ufw rules and start from scratch?

Did you repeatedly pull and plug the cable during time covered by the journal?

Should i flush all ufw rules and start from scratch?

How can I verify if NM accepts dns?  I think that might be the isdue, as per ufw i see the dns requests going out but not in from the router @ entware dnscrypt prox2

Hey I disable everything, rebooted and I noticed ufw would still be up.  So I disabled again and before rebooting I clear my saved session, rebooted again and now I am able to get connectivity.

Looks like the culprit could be wrong ufw rule inputs?

Weird enough but i got connectivity with ufw set to defauls after sudo ufw reset

sudo ufw status verbose
Status: active
Logging: on (medium)
Default: deny (incoming), allow (outgoing), disabled (routed)
New profiles: skip

I am following your advice and now setting up services one at a time, so far tor service and chrony are operational

Thanks a lot especially for going through that huge boot log of mine :-)

at least you empowered a user as now I know if it reoccurs how to properly diagnose

I'll wait until everything is up before marking this one as solved

lastly should I keep UFW with default settings or update as the wiki?

I will definitely keep that in mind, thanks again for your assistance and please if possible mark as solved as I couldn't find the way to do so

Ok thanks but I am glad I haven't closed it yet
because I found the real culprit, I don't think it was UFW or nftables

After the full system upgrade, something has changed in regards to etc/fstab (maybe the layout or amount of spaces between inputs)
A USB key plugged into my router has entware with various logs I access via ssh
I had the /opt partition of that key setup in fstab as such

root@192.168.230.52:/opt	/home/sanzanmi/LocalShares/	fuse.sshfs	noauto,x-systemd.automount,_netdev,user,idmap=user,follow_symlinks,port=19580,identityfile=/home/sanzanmi/.ssh/ddwrtnopass5,allow_other,default_permissions,uid=1000,gid=1000	0	0

After the system upgrade that line no longer works
so after 5 unsuccessful ssh connection attempts @ boot the router would just block my ip address and I failed to see the log since I couldn't access the router.
The terminal and other stuff would break because of that ssh connection hanging

I am not sure of what has changed exactly but after I told you that I had finally restored connectivity, I added that line back to fstab and I started loosing connectivity again
So I factory reset the router, reinstalled the firmware, unchecked limit ssh from the router's security tab and problem solved.
