HDMI external monitor limited to 1680x1050

Hello, I'm having an issue with my external monitor (ASUS VG27WQ) when I plug it in, it is detected by my laptop (Lenovo 500w 2-in-1 Gen 5) but my external monitor is showing "no signal".
My screen supports 2560x1440@165Hz. And my pc output is limited to ASUS 2560x1440@60Hz and 1920x1080@120Hz

I tested other resolutions and refresh rates and it seems that the higher resolution that is working is 1680x1050 at 59,88Hz

I'm pretty sure that it isn't an hardware issue because when I was on windows, it worked perfectly on 2560x1440@60Hz and 1920x1080@120Hz

Any idea what could cause this, or how to make the higher resolutions work properly ?

Re: HDMI external monitor limited to 1680x1050

Could it be a driver issue? Try updating you system and see if the problem persist.

Feel free to send me an email if you need anything!

I updated multiple times, re installed all the drivers but the error persists

Re: HDMI external monitor limited to 1680x1050

Please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -s -H "Accept: application/json, */*" --upload-file - 'https://paste.c-net.org/'

Is this on X11 or some wayland compositor (=> which specifically)?

First : there is the output of journalctl -b : https://paste.c-net.org/MuggedBeside

and iḿ on kwin (kde plasma wayland). but the issue is also on xfwm4 or any other compositor

Re: HDMI external monitor limited to 1680x1050

This all looks rather unsuspicious, the render device is there, just not the /dev/dri/* symlink?
The HDMI output does not seem to have been attached during that X11 run, please reboot, check whether /dev/dri/renderD128 exists, start an X11 session (what's your DM btw? In case of SDDM: X11 or wayland backend?) and post
1. your new xorg log
2. the output of "xrandr --verbose"
3.

for OUT in /sys/class/drm/card*; do echo $OUT; edid-decode $OUT/edid; echo "================="; done

You'll need https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/v4l-utils/

1080@60p does not work?
I could see a poor cable downshifting to to 165Hz TMDS but that would still allow FullHD, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Refr … dard_video
1680x1050 at 59,88Hz is a rather weird cap…

I'm using gdm

My new Xorg log : https://paste.c-net.org/AbsentNamed

The output of xrandr --verbose : https://paste.c-net.org/CuervoUpdate

the output of for OUT in /sys/class/drm/card*; do echo $OUT; edid-decode $OUT/edid; echo "================="; done : https://paste.c-net.org/SimonSleaze

Suddenly, when I was typing the commands (with the external monitor pluged but showing no signal and my screen and my laptop screen going black and then back to normal), the screen worked in 1440@59,95Hz. I tried 1080@120Hz but it showed no signal again. I retried to put on 1440@59.95 but it doesn't work anymore.

This can't be an HDMI cable issue because I can plug my PS5 to the same screen in 1440@120Hz (I don't know if that explains anything)

Re: HDMI external monitor limited to 1680x1050

[     7.385] (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Sun Apr 19 06:18:29 2026

xorg log is old, GDM 50 actually cannot start X11 sessions and although the xrandr output actually doesn't suggest that, make sure you're not running some wayland session:

loginctl session-status
eDP-1 connected 1920x1200+2560+0 (0x48) normal (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 263mm x 164mm
…
  2560x1440 (0x95) 241.500MHz +HSync -VSync *current +preferred
        h: width  2560 start 2608 end 2640 total 2720 skew    0 clock  88.79KHz
        v: height 1440 start 1443 end 1448 total 1481           clock  59.95Hz

This mode is preferred and current but I assume at the time you received no signal - can you move the pointer into the dead area (to the left)?

Cut out GDM, boot the multi-user.target and from there "startx" (you'll need to install xterm for the default xinitrc) and see whether you can xrandr-control the outputs from there.
If not, my last best guess would be https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … _Xe_driver

When there is "no signal", I can move my mouse into the dead area.

I tried to use xrandr to control the outputs but the same issue is happening (no signal again).

I looked at https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … _Xe_driver and maybe this is my case because I have an intel N150 CPU (twin lake) and it's newer than tiger lake. The only problem is that I don't have linux 6.8 or above...

I used the kernel settings to test the new Xe driver, rebooted, put

xrandr --output HDMI-1 --mode 1920x1080 --rate 60 --pos 0x0

And it worked. I tested other resolutions or refresh rates but the interesting ones does not work (1440@59.95 or 1080@120)

Re: HDMI external monitor limited to 1680x1050

[  2149.690] (--) modeset(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 225000KHz

Does this change w/ xe?
Or does it help to re-attach the monitor?

From your EDID

Does it help to add

intel_idle.max_cstate=1 i915.enable_dc=0 ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=1

resp

intel_idle.max_cstate=1 xe.enable_dc=0 ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=1

to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters ?

Re: HDMI external monitor limited to 1680x1050

I tried to add

 intel_idle.max_cstate=1 xe.enable_dc=0 ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=1

with xe enabled but that didn't solve the issue.

I diabled xe and put

 intel_idle.max_cstate=1 i915.enable_dc=0 ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=1

and it didn't work too

btw I don't know why but

 xrandr --output HDMI-1 --mode 1920x1080 --rate 60 --pos 0x0

doesn't work anymore

Re: HDMI external monitor limited to 1680x1050

Likewise not w/ the xe module?

Does it still say

[  2149.690] (--) modeset(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 225000KHz

Do you happen to have another monitor (to rule out the EDID setting) and in any event try the LTS kernel and a different cable.
225 MHz will get you 1080p60 at most.

Re: HDMI external monitor limited to 1680x1050

With or without the xe module, it doesn't work.
The max TMDS frequency is still the same.
Using the lts kernel doesn't change anything, same for changing the cable.

I tried to plug in another monitor with the same cable and it worked as normal in 1920x1080@60 (Its higher resolution and refresh rate)

So I don't know what's the issue because a random samsung screen is working fine in 1920x1080@60 but my asus one doesn't work on the same resolution...
