when its held too long
Can you quantify "too long"?
the controller shuts off
sudo journalctl -fIs this paired w/ bluetooth/udev/kernel events? Which?
What happens after "the controller shuts off"? Does it still work on subsequent invocations (ie. only the immediate action stops but the controller continues to work afterwards)?
on my old install i didnt have this problem … a laptop running arch works fine there the controller stays on
Do you use the same desktop environment / display server on all of them?

By default a legit DualShock3 will turn off after holding the PS button for about 10 seconds.
