Using a terminal window as a background for i3wm

I'm using i3 window manager, and I thought it would be awesome to replace my static wallpaper(using feh) with a terminal-based "heads up" script, running on cool-retro-term. It would just sit behind my windows and stuff, not able to be interacted with and showing a clock and some hacker-y decorative things. I've been trying to find a way to get cool-retro-term or even just my regular terminal, kitty, to run behind i3. xwinwrap seems promising and i can get a video as my background using that and mpv, but it won't do the same with the terminal. Has anyone tried to set their window manager up like this before?

Probably because it's not embeddable - their abilities to act as actual TEs are limited but have you tried the terminal emulators from the xscreensaver package (phosphor)?
