How to combine font variants for font selectors

When I look for a font in an application like Gimp or Libre Office Writer, it's practically impossible to search (unless you know the name), because I can see an entry for every variant of a font I have. See below for Gimp.

It feels to me like this shouldn't be the case, because I couldn't find a single other person complaining about this - however, I also don't know how to fix this.

I don't know if it matters, but I'm on KDE (and KDE's font manager actually recognizes the font families correctly and groups them).

gtk3-demo / Pickers
It's just gtk/gnome UX I'm afraid.

Idk whether there's a bias in the author but if it frustrates you https://woltman.com/gnome-bad/ might be a happy read smile
