~ $ sudo modprobe -r ntsync
~ $ wineboot --init

still hangs

linux-lts also hangs with and without ntsync kernel module

Does it also still hang in the NTSYNC syscall?
Edit: even despite the module remaining unloaded??

You'll probably have to file a bug upstream - I don't see how anything on your site could be responsible for this.

Fixed upstream in version 20.

#60484 wine 11.19 dnsapi parsing a large /etc/hosts stalls fresh prefix initialization.

(I have very large /etc/hosts for ad blocking.)
