[SOLVED] package in Extra is v 1:3.2.0-1. upstream tar.gz is 3.2.0 !!

I have installed aMule from the Extra repository; it is version 1:3.2.0-1. Today, when i started up aMule, it informed me of an upgrade and directed me to the upstream page on  github. There i see that version 3.2.0 is available as a "drop-in" release for Linux. There are many security, performance, and feature improvements listed in the release notes.

Is there any "safe" or "correct" way to   apply the tar.gz to my current installation, or do I simply need to wait for the package in Extra to be updated.

thanks

They are the same version. The number before the colon is the epoch, part of the way pacman tracks package versions. The number after the dash is the pkgrel, another way that pacman tracks package versions. The number between them is the pkgver, the upstream way of tracking software releases. 3.2.0 == 3.2.0. Make sure you're not running an order version of the software (e.g. installed via make install to /usr/local), and/or report upstream that there is a bug in their version detection logic.

Thank you. I realized this a few moments ago, and logged in to update my question; but you already provided the answer!

Another mistake i almost made was that when I tried "pacman -S amule", it offered to reinstall 1:3.1.0-1. I almost complained that despite my earlier mistake, the package that pacman knew about was still not the latest package. But I caught myself remembering that when updating anything, one needs to update everything.  And sure enough,  the command "sudo pacman -Syu"  upgraded (among everything it did)         amule 3.1.0 to 3.2.0.

Thank you for being so newbie-friendly. I'll mark this as solved.
